In the 1940s, lenses were a novel fashion option, and they were all the rage with "film stars, jockeys, and athletes." But as this 1948 film dug up by British Pathé demonstrates, to acquire a pair of the hot new custom-made "glasses," you would need to drop "45 " to have your eye aestheticized and let a doctor make a custom mold with some mysterious white paste in a Clockwork Orange-like procedure. Then it's just a simple matter of pressing the lenses around the mold and grinding off the excess plastic.

Voilà, movie star looks.
