Ford's 1-Liter Fits in Your Carry-on

PopMech gave a 2012 Breakthrough Award to the itsy-bitsy 1.0-liter Ecoboost engine from Ford. Just how puny are its proportions? Take a look.

If you've been finding it hard to visualize just how minuscule Ford's 3-cylinder 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is, the company provided us with this handy image, showing the pint-sized powerplant tucked into a carry-on bag.

While taking a display model of the engine from Europe, where it's available in the Focus, to the later this month, Ford pulled off a clever stunt to demonstrate the Breakthrough Award-winning engine's proportions: passing it through Detroit Metro Airport's security. (Albeit with a call to the TSA first, says Ford's car communications manager Dan Mazei.)

Although the tiniest Ecoboost is available only overseas at the moment, you won't need to smuggle it into the States in your suitcase to get a taste. The 125-hp turbocharged inline-three will come to America as an option on the 2014 Fiesta.
