Jerry Sanders had already been a fan of customized VW vans when our own modified take on the classic chassis, dubbed the Boonie Bug, a hybrid camper/station wagon that you could build on your own, ran in the . Sanders ponied up the $15 for the full plans (plus a little more for an old VW Transporter chassis), and spent two years making the mashup vehicle. Sanders's Boonie earned several awards at local auto shows and starred in era-defining photos like this one, before Sanders eventually sold it in 1984, airbrushed mural and all.
