Appreciate Jack Kirby comics
The connection between Lucas and one of the most important comic artists of all time may not seem immediately apparent—until you look at some of his characters. There’s Doctor Doom, who made his first appearance in Fantastic Four #5 in 1962. A genius drunk on power, hiding his scarred face behind a mask, and with a long cape swirling behind him, Doctor Doom certainly bears similarities to Darth Vader.
The comparisons don’t stop with Doom. Although the biggest twist of the original series, discovering that Darth Vader is Luke’s father, could have come from other sources (possibly Dune, which we’ve already talked about), that antagonistic father/son relationship can also be seen in Kirby’s New Gods between Darkseid and Orion.
