Netflix has announced that Steve Carrell and Greg Daniels, two of the creative forces behind the hit American version The Office, have a new science-fiction show based around a version of the Space Force, the still-hypothetical sixth branch of military proposed by President Trump.

The series appears to be taking the satirical route toward the Space Force, which President Trump on June 18, 2018, after signing Space Policy Directive 3, a document mostly dealing with satellites in low-Earth orbit and space junk.

Since that declaration, there has been pushback against the Space Force as a fully independent branch of the military. Former secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James a Space Force would be by far "the smallest service in the military if it happens. It would be smaller than the Coast Guard. Is that really going to have enough heft to make it viable for the long term so that a Space Force can stand its ground against much larger entities in the budget, policy, political arena? I think that’s a risk. I also think the risk of bureaucratic thrashing is enormous."

The central question of James' critique—what would the actual Space Force do?—appears to be the conceit for the coming Netflix show. The show's teaser trailer, which does not mention President Trump by name, spins a fictional story out of the June 18 declaration.

While President Trump called for a Space Force, the fate of an independent branch of the military dedicated to space is still in question. In December, that the Pentagon's draft proposal for the entity would call for it to be housed within the Air Force.

The Netflix trailer declares that the stated goal of the Space Force is "to defend satellites from attack" and "perform other space-related tasks." In real life, the Space Force would not be limited to satellites—Vice President Pence, who also chairs the National Space Council, that the goal of a Space Force would be "American dominance in space."

While the fictional Space Force seems to edge away from the militaristic aspects of such an entity, it's far too early to tell what the show will actually be about. But it's certainly got a promising creative team. Netflix says the show is coming "soon."
