Any homeower dreams of having a stylish, secret lair where they can smoke a pipe and sip on glass of cognac while staring into the fireplace. The question is, where can one put it so that it's truly far from the madding crowd?
found the perfect place when he made what seems to be a built-in bookcase from raw materials...
...and fit it into what used to be the doorway to the coal chute room.
"The bookcase is attached to a frame of the same 3/4" poplar I made the
bookcase out of.
The door frame was tediously shimmed to be perfectly level with a laser
before being screwed down securely to the wall stud with about 24
screws," he wrote. "The top frame was done the same way, but horizontally and to
leave the correct spacing on top of the bookcase."
Once you click the hidden latch, the bookcase creaks open to reveal a secret smoking parlor, as in an Indiana Jones film.
Once inside, you're greeted by a cheap vinyl highback chair that appears to have spent its past life in a salon...
...as well as an electric lamp and a replica of the idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The mantelpiece is adorned with a wooden ship that was acquired for $17, antlers that were picked up during a hike, and miscellaneous metal boxes and bowls purchased at an estate sale for pennies.
Behind the chair there is a small desk rescued from a relative's basement, a lamp purchased at a garage sale for $3, and a vintage map purchased for $5 on Amazon. Oh, and the dude's epic collection of tobacciana and pipes.
Though the space is only 5 feet by 12 feet, it's quite cozy. There's a coal chute that can be propped open and in which a fan can be installed to allow for some extra ventilation. The electric fireplace can run two levels of heat, which will be great in the wintertime as the room is located with six sides of concrete under the front porch.
The Imgur user glazed the walls in Oxblood and lined them with a dark brown trim to make it looks like a secret room from the turn of the century.
Then of course, there's the random photo of a raccoon, which he got in college and which his wife has vetoed for the house. Because it isn't a real man cave unless you have something the wife doesn't like.
King of the castle.
