Take a Fleet Week Tour of the USS Oak Hill
The USS Oak Hill is a towering grey ship, commissioned back in 1996 for amphibious warfare. Within its hull, the Oak Hill carries about 1000 sailors and Marines, along with light armored vehicles, tanks, and even grenade launchers. The Oak Hill was deployed to the Persian Gulf for Operation Enduring Freedom, and has recently visited the Horn of Africa. Last week, though, the powerful ship docked at Pier 92 in Manhattan. Its mission: to showcase our military might as the flagship for Fleet Week New York 2014.
Fleet Week New York is the city's annual celebration of the soldiers and machines behind the United States Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. From May 21 until just yesterday, the was open to the public for tours of the ship led by active crew members. At Seniorhelpline, we boarded the Oak Hill ourselves to chat with a few of the brave soldiers who protect our nation at sea.
