Just when you think all hope is lost in the world, along comes Vincent, a 3-year-old cat who is now walking thanks to the amazing work of his doctors.
Vincent was born with a congenital deformity that left him without rear tibias. The cat was only a month old when Cindy Jones found him at an animal shelter in Story County, Iowa and instantly fell in love. Who could blame her? Here's what he looked like:
Working with veterinary orthopedic implant manufacturer , Mary Sarah Bergh of the Iowa State Veterinary Hospital successfully had two titanium-alloy pegs inserted directly into Vincent's bones, allowing him to get around remarkably well.
"I think this does open the door for us to be able to help other animals that have similar problems," Bergh said in a statement. "And even what we've learned just through Vincent's one case, we've actually refined the technique and the implants, so the next cases we do moving forward will be even more successful."
