You've got to go to the ends of the Earth to fully understand how changes there affect the broader climate around the planet. Luckily, NASA scientists are up to the challenge.
NASA's Operation IceBridge uses a fleet of research aircraft to help make sense of the connections between polar regions and the global climate system. Last year, , it was sending planes over Greenland to track seasonal changes in the elevation of the ice sheet. Great Big Story was tracking them and have made a short documentary about the experience, showing the intensity of the work that goes into studying the climate.
The ice sheets of the planet define the shape of the planet. As man-made climate change effects these ice sheets, infrastructure and governments will have to adapt.
NASA may have to adapt though, too. NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) climate change. When President Trump's NASA Administrator nominee, Jim Bridenstine, takes office, a certain tension is expected within the agency, as the former Republican congressman from Oklahoma has been openly skeptical of climate change.
