Dropping Ice Down a Borehole Makes a Surreal Sound

It's not what we were expecting.


It's not shocking that dropping a chunk of ice down a 90-meter borehole into an Antarctic glacier sounds cool, but the actual sound it makes is still totally unexpected. In this video posted on Twitter by glaciologist Peter Neff, we hear a recording of this surprising sound.

The drop begins with some hollow clunky noises. But as the ice reaches the bottom of the 270 foot deep hole, it makes an incredible sound that is reminiscent of either a sci-fi laser blaster or the noise that old-fashioned . It's an extremely amusing phenomenon, and just one of the many discoveries that have come out of plumbing glaciers' depths.
