Janelle Shane is a research scientist who blogs about neural networks. In the past, she's used neural nets to generate hilarious ideas for , , , and many other things. Now, her network has turned its robot eyes on a seasonal obsession: Halloween costume ideas.
In a , Shane runs through how the network was trained. She used a crowdsourced data set, asking her readers to submit costume ideas, which generated a list of 4,500 data points. Then, Shane fed this into a neural network which learns words without any previous knowledge of their meaning or usage.
Then, over the course of the network's training, Shane checked to see how it was doing. At first, it struggled to combine words into coherent costume ideas, coming up with such baffling suggestions as "Sexy sexy Dombie Sexy Cat," "The Gull Wot," and "Frankenstein's Denter." For a long time, the only real word used in many costumes was sexy, thanks to the number of times it appeared in the sample data set—300 times to be exact.
Finally, the machine found its niche: bizarre, absurd mash-up costumes that make little sense but are hilarious to imagine. Here's a selection of some of the best:
If these don't satisfy your AI-mediated costume idea needs, there's a whole extra list of them over . Happy Halloween! We can't wait to see your Shower Witch costume.
